I'm out of TSLA. Profit: $50/share. Will probably focus on less expensive stocks now and use my play money as an excuse to learn about other industries.

Nice. Can't beat $50 a share for somewhat quick profit.

How bad are taxes on say 1000 profit? Is that based under capital gains?

If it's anything like Employee Stock Purchase Plans, then it depends on how long you hold the stock(<1Year or 1Year+). If you hold it less than a year it's 10% to almost 40%, but if you have it longer than a year it's 0%,10%, or 15%, both of these ranges are depending on your Taxable income.
