Glad to hear there is some improvement hopefully in a week or so will be able to come off ventilator. The human body is a crazy complicated system.

Journal entry by Linda Roemen — 4/28/2017

An update on Sharla, she is off all sedation medications. They have also been weaning her off of the ventilator for 8 hours a day the past twodays. Since she has been relying on the ventilator for the past 20+ days this is really exhausting work for Sharla. She is on antibiotics as she has been running a slight fever the past couple of days. Sharla had an MRI last night. The doctor has not made his rounds yet today so we do not know if there are changes from the last one. We feel that Sharla can hear us when we talk to her but she has not followed commands. Last evening she was moved from neurology ICU to acute pulmonary floor.

Please continue to pray for Sharla and her family andfriends.

Journal entry by Linda Roemen — 24 minutes ago

Sharla has been off sedation medications since last week. The reality of the extent of her anoxic brain damage has become more obvious. She has not responded to commands. She has occasional involuntary movement of her arms and legs. Her eyes are open and she blinks but her eyes do not seem to focus. Sharla moves her head side to side involuntarily when awake. According to the doctors, this movement is called sympathetic storming and is caused by her brain injury. She has been off the ventilator for over 24 hours (Yay!). She still has a tracheal tube in and is receiving humidified air.

Sharla was moved yesterday from the Pulmonary Acute floor of Sanford to the Select Specialty Hospital within Sanford. Those of you not familiar with Select Specialty it is a longer term hospital where they will focus on making sure Sharla stays off the ventilator and focus on rehabilitation. Therapists will work with her to try to stimulate the undamaged parts of the brain. In the next couple of days they will do evaluations and develop plans on what her rehabilitation goals are. For her family and friends, the therapists plan to give us suggestions on things that we can do that may help stimulate the 5 senses to work again. For example, recordings of the kids voices, singing simple nursery rhymes, talking soothingly about familiar things, touching, familiar smells, etc. The next 30 days are key to Sharla’s rehabilitation. We pray that we see progress. We refuse to lose hope!!

Please continue to pray for Sharla and her family. The outpouring of support during this time is amazing. It has become so apparent the abundance of love everyone has for Sharla and her family.

That is an amazing amount of stress on a Father. I hope she can make as good a recovery as possible, which will take time.

Prayers for their family.

Journal entry by Linda Roemen — 13 hours ago

Sharla has been in Select Hospital since May 4th.We wanted to give everyone a high level update of what has happened since then. She is seeing therapists Mon-Friday once a day. They sometimes sit her up on the edge of the bed while holding her up. The staff also gets her up in the cardiac chair twice a day for two hours. She still has Chorea movement of her arms and legs. This may or may not go away as time goes on. She still has a tracheal tube in but has downsized from a size 8 to a 6. She is still receiving humidified air. Today the speech therapist put a Passy-Muir speaking value on and we heard her make sounds.

We have seen many emotional responses and we know she can hear us! She shows facial expressions that indicate sadness, frustration, and we even seen a couple of slight smiles. We have gotten her to do some things on command such as sticking out her tongue, squeezing our hand, kicking her leg. BUT these responses are delayed and not consistent (doesn’t do it every time we ask).

We are hoping to get her into a rehabilitation facility that focuses on patients with brain injuries.

Thank you for your continuing prayers, calls and visits. The tremendous love everyone has for Sharla and her family is so apparent.

Can't even imagine how I would handle it. Huge burden on Paul and kids, hope his family can put differences aside and be there for him right now.
