A new kids' shoe store, dental office and gelato business are some of the new tenants opening soon at The Empire Mall.

Journeys Kidz will be located next to Journeys in the previous Select Comfort space according to Jennifer Morrison, the mall's director of marketing and business development.

The concept launched in 2001 as an extension of the Journeys store. It offers shoes for kids five to 12 with brands including Sperry, Polo, Vans, DC, Nike, Puma, UGG, and TOMS.

Select Comfort is temporarily located in the J.C. Penney wing in the previous Hallmark space before it moves out of the mall to a space at 41st Street and Louise Avenue.

Leather Legends also will be moving to the J.C. Penney wing from the Sears wing. A new dentist's office, smilesforsiouxland.com, will take the leather store's old space.

New boutique opens at Empire Mall

Other businesses are planning to open in the mall's common spaces.

Boki Gelato Italian Artisan Ice Cream is planning to open in the coming weeks. It will be located in a kiosk at center court, outside Charlotte Russe.

Heaven Scent, offering essential oils, will also open in the common area just outside Victoria's Secret.

Twin Cities-based Asian restaurant Leeann Chin has opened at The Empire Mall.

The chain sells combination plates and appetizers. If the mall location does well, company representatives have said additional stores might open in Sioux Falls.

Leeann Chin took the space of another Asian restaurant in the food court. Later this summer, a new concept, Mediterranean Ville, plans to open in the final remaining space that used to be Dairy Queen.

It will sell Greek cuisine such as gyros.

PizzaRev has found its first Sioux Falls location.

The growing build-your-own pizza chain will locate on the east end of a new office and retail center that is part of the Plains Commerce Bank expansion along 49th Street near Louise Avenue, according to Scott Blount of Lloyd Cos., who leased the space.

PizzaRev is being franchised by Todd Porter, who also operates Applebee's, Chevys and Carino's restaurants in Sioux Falls.

"It's a great building," said Raquel Blount of Lloyd Cos., who represents the space. "Most people can see what it's going to look like, and it'll be a lot of easier" to lease the remaining space.

The Dawley Farm retail area in east Sioux Falls is preparing for its next phase of development, which will including shopping, dining and housing and be designed more like a village.

About 280 acres of the property south of 18th Street have been rezoned under the city’s new ordinance.

“We are trying to accommodate retail interest on the east side,” said Raquel Blount of Lloyd Cos., the project’s developer. “We have found we have some restrictions north of 18th Street that don’t allow us to have certain stores or competitors, and we want to be able to expand the shopping experience.

Retailers must be 75,000 square feet or smaller, which is smaller than Kohl’s, Blount said.

“We’d like to continue the theme with retailers such as a pet store, bedding store, office supply store,” she said.

There also will be space for smaller, specialty retailers and four-plex units designed for people who want to live and work in the area.

Other strip mall tenants on the Dawley property include rue21, Cherry Berry and Christopher and Banks, which will open later this summer.

Buffalo Wild Wings plans to start construction this year, Blount said. The restaurant owners are planning a building large enough that they can lease 5,000 square feet to other retailers.

“It would not be a restaurant,” Blount said. “They would do a couple small retailers.”

Another strip mall also is close to starting and drawing interest from tenants, she said.

A commercial area that was planned north of 18th Street probably will develop as apartments.
